Too much polish, not enough grit, but still brilliant

#16 in my Cheap Trick album rankings
Millions of Cheap Trick fans will want to hang me in effigy for saying this – But the production off In Color is way too polished for my liking. It is the direct opposite of the self-titled release, which to me was brilliant. The other big factor that comes into play is each studio track sounds 500 times better off Live At Budokan. It is to the point that If I am in the mood to hear any In Color songs, I usually just grab Budokan – That is a problem.
The Steve Albini version, which I’ll refer to as “In Color (Naked)” is OK. I’d probably rank that somewhere in the middle of this list, again if the live album did not exist.
Best Track: Downed (cue Carl Woods putting on his headphones).
Worst track: I Want You To Want Me (studio version, ugh!)

First time I heard CT was after this release as they opened for Kiss in Tucson. Remember riding bus to a local record store and buying “In Color and In Black and White” and being blown away by the music. Almost 50 years later this is still an incredibly strong musical statement.

Though I find this weaker than the two albums that surround it, I still think this is a good album. My two favorite songs are Hello There and Downed. Great singing, as usual, from Robin Zander. Very catchy songs. It feels like a summer album to me. Very short, though and no dangerous songs like The Ballad of T.V. Violence and Auf Wiedersehen. Good album.
