As a child I remember hearing West End Girls on the radio all the time in Minneapolis. I loved the lyrics. I was 9 at the time, and didn't own any music of my own.
Later, in 1993, I officially "discovered" the Pet Shop Boys when I discovered their lego case album "Very" in a Kmart I worked at. I recalled they'd sang WEG, and bought both Discography and Very that same day. I fell in love. Immediately. Soon after I found the special edition "Very Relentless" and bought it.
Within a year I owned all their albums. When Alternative came out, a collection of all their b-sides, I was already I die-hard fan. But nothing prepared me for how cool this album was. All their subversive and most creative music lies in their b-sides. I remember listening to this in bed with my headset, never falling asleep. Every track is perfect, but the highlight for me is the dance floor grinder "Euroboy". It sounds like something out of some sci-fi adventure film.
I'm hoping their american record label releases their 2011 b-side collection, 'Format' one day. Its also amazing.
