Ahmad Jamal was equally if not better suited to the Fender Rhodes than an acoustic piano and this album features his adept playing on both. There's more acoustic piano than anything here, actually. Case in point: The breathtaking "Misty". The idea behind Digital Works was not to create an electric album, but rather to cut out all the live ado of earlier recordings and put the spotlight onto Jamal's skills as a composer and bandleader. This album presents a more mature Jamal who has cut out the EP cliche of the early 70s for silky smooth grooves such as in "Midnight Sun" or the Mash theme. Any Ahmad Jamal fan WILL find this double LP essential and anyone seeking to hear Jamal without the contraints of poor 1950s recordings marred by jazz club hubbub will find pleasure in this album.
