  • Underrated!

Once in a while, a truly great record (or band) doesn’t grab you at first listen. You play it, let it rest, listen a couple more times and POW! It hits you like a bus! This is one of those. Sure, it follows a similar formula as many of their records; a cumbia, norteño, blues, rockers, a splash of soul… but they push it to new heights here and thus attain a new cruising altitude. Gates of Gold showcases their craftsmanship. This album is deep, complex, subtly psychedelic and really opens up when you listen. Try it with headphones on a lazy afternoon and your favorite relaxant. You’ll get it!

So good, so very good. What a band. One foot in blues, one foot in pop, heads in some mystic place where music speaks universally
  • Missing the Early Pop/Rock Sensibilities

I’m glad they have been following their muse in recent years, but I really, REALLY miss the spontaneity and confident rock/pop sensibilities of the early albums. Those albums are essential. Sorry, the later works are not. They need to stop overthinking it, go into the studio and bang out a fun, catchy album.

They never get old! Still as good as they've ever been. One of the most original and talented bands ever.

‘Too Small Heart’—tell me it doesn’t evoke Hendrix and underrated blue-eyed Motowners, Rare Earth. It’s dead on.

Sonically beautiful with complex storytelling. Other than U2, what other band is still putting out this caliber of music after so many years?
