Foiled

We’ve all been asked at one time or another that now age-old question: “If you were stuck on an uncharted island and only had three (or five, depending on who is asking the question) albums to listen to for the rest of your life what would they be?” and that’s often a tough question to answer! One of those albums would be this one, without a doubt. While ‘Hate Me’, ‘X Amount of Words’, and ‘Into the Ocean’ are the most popular songs on ‘Foiled’ there’s not a single song on the album that I don’t enjoy; I can just press play and listen from the first to the last song and there’s never a need for me to skip a song. Blue October’s ‘Foiled’ is one of those albums that I can listen to time and again without growing tired of it, and that’s a pretty rare thing in a world in which most music just repeats the same four chords and are 7-11 songs - the same seven words repeated eleven times. ‘Foiled’ is not an album of 7-11 songs. Justin Furstenfeld isn’t only a song writer, he’s a poet of, at least in my opinion, exceptional skill. His lyrics invoke imagery and passion even when some of the lyrics are slightly nonsensical, and you can tell that many, if not all, of the songs on this album are deeply personal to Justin. The band itself doesn’t just rely on the same four chords but create music that is enjoyable to listen to; they’re talented musicians who clearly enjoy their craft. No, I am not a friend or family member to anyone in this band, nor do I work in the music industry and no one is giving me anything whatsoever for posting a glowing review for them; I just really, really love this album. This could be one of the only three to five albums that I could ever listen to again on that fictional lonely island and be happy to do so; I bought this album when it was released back in, what…2004? 2005? And I’m still listening to it in October 2023. Weirdly enough I’ve never listened to another Blue October album; I’ve not even heard another song from them that’s not on this album. I need to check out their other albums considering how much I love this one. If you’ve not listened to ‘Foiled’ I strongly encourage you to do so; I believe that you will enjoy the album as much as I do.

It sounds very good. I first heard about Blue October from the song “into the ocean”. I liked the song and once I found the album I just loved it!

Can be listened from beginning to end and not skip one single track. That just doesn’t happen with music anymore.

When I first bought this cd, I remember loving every song. That was rare for me esp during the post grunge days. The only other album that did that for me after grunge was ATDI’s Relationship of Command. The really surprising part was my brother also loved all the songs and he and I have different tastes in music. He is more into country. Great album.

I’ve never heard another album so effortlessly become a new, interesting piece of my life. I’m changed by listening to this album. I don’t feel capable if writing down the differences between this and other music. It’s just unique and meaningful and seriously openly deeper than I’ve ever heard an artist spill themselves out, and it sounds really good. I have no more words. Bravo

Not my favorite album. Didn’t like any more than one or two songs. They all sound like fillers. Sad
